BIS is a third-party certification body, whose certified products will be marked with ISI label, which has great influence in India and surrounding countries, has good reputation and is a reliable guarantee for product quality. Once the product is marked with "ISI mark", it means that it meets the relevant standards of India, and consumers can buy it at ease.
Since 1955, the Indian Standards Institute has been implementing product certification programs. After the establishment of the Bureau of Indian Standards, the management function of product certification project has been continued. In 1999, the Bureau of Indian Standards began to certify products exported to India. So far, 19000 product certification certificates have been issued for more than 1000 products.
In order to unify product supervision standards and requirements and ensure product quality and safety, India began to implement product certification system in 1955. According to the BIS Act 1986, the product certification in India is based on the principle of voluntary certification. However, in consideration of public health and safety, public consumption and other factors, the Indian government has issued an immediate decree to implement compulsory certification for specific products. It aims to provide the final consumers with quality assurance, safe and reliable products. All products listed in the compulsory certification must obtain the product certification certificate according to the Indian product standard before entering the market. Therefore, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the product certification system of India for the manufacturers who want to enter the Indian market
According to the BIS Act 1986, BIS is the competent organization of standardization and certification in India, which is responsible for product certification. It is also the only product certification organization in India. It was formally established in 1987 to replace the Indian Standards Institute established in 1946. The Bureau of standards of India (BIS) is subordinate to the Ministry of consumer affairs and public distribution. Although it is a social legal entity, it performs government functions. Its main tasks are to formulate and implement national standards; implement the conformity assessment system; participate in international standardization activities such as ISO and IEC on behalf of the state. The Bureau of standards of India (BIS) is a financially independent organization with certified revenue as its main source of income. There are 5 Regional bureaus and 19 sub bureaus under BIS. The regional bureau supervises the corresponding branch. 8 laboratories and some independent laboratories of bis are responsible for the inspection of samples taken during the product certification process. These laboratories are all in accordance with ISO / IEC17025:1999.
Since the product certification started in 1955 by the Indian Standards Institute, the predecessor of BIS, the product certification in India has a history of 50 years. At present, BIS has issued more than 30000 product certification certificates, and manufacturers are allowed to affix ISI labels after obtaining the certificates. The certification covers almost every industrial field, such as agricultural products, textiles, electronics, etc.
Principle
1. Some products are voluntary certification: India's product certification implements the principle of voluntary certification, aiming to provide the final consumers with quality assurance, safety and reliability products.
2. Some products are compulsory certification: considering the public health and safety as well as public consumption and other factors, the Indian government has issued an immediate decree to implement compulsory certification for specific products. The Bureau of standards of India only grants the certification certificate for the application, and the specific compulsory work is carried out by the relevant authority.

ISI mark issued by BIS is the mark that the product conforms to Indian Standards, and also the certificate of conformity to product specifications. All bis certification shall be in accordance with Indian Standards, and the general ISI mark shall be used for those passing the test and obtaining the certificate. For more than 40 years, the ISI logo has been a symbol of quality products in India and its neighbours. Because quite a part of Indian Standards are consistent with ISO standards of international organization for standardization and IEC standards of International Electrotechnical Commission, Indian standard numbers are basically consistent with ISO / IEC standards, and some standards also have double numbers, such as is / ISO or is / IEC, so they are labeled with is / ISO and is / IEC double marks.

1. The manufacturer has set up an office or liaison agency or appointed agent in India;
2. The manufacturer's factory must be equipped with all the infrastructure for testing the products to be approved to meet the relevant Indian Standards
2. records. BIS will review the application documents and materials submitted by the applicant and record the application if the procedures are complete. Applicants are required to pay the corresponding processing fee.
3. Initial factory inspection. BIS will assign a team of no more than 2 officials to the factory for inspection. The applicant shall bear the travel and visa expenses of the official delegation to the factory for inspection and the corresponding inspection expenses.
4. Issue certificate. If the initial inspection and test results are qualified, and the applicant agrees to implement the inspection and test scheme approved by BIS and pay for BIS identification fee after certification, the certificate can be issued to the applicant. The certificate is valid for one year. After the certificate is awarded, the holder shall pay the annual identification fee and certificate annual fee.
5. Post certification supervision. BIS supervises the quality of its certified products through routine supervision of the executor and surprise inspection and test of samples in the factory and market. If the samples taken from the factory or market meet the requirements of the factory inspection and independent test results, the certificate can be updated. The holder shall apply to bis for renewal by submitting the specified form, and the certificate renewal fee shall be rs. 500. The holder shall also bear the cost of sample inspection.
